At some point in humanity's future, maybe sooner than we think, we will have to deal with the reality of potentially conscious artificial intelligences. If the mind is in fact merely an emergent byproduct of a complex brain then there is no reason that other complex forms could not also give birth to other emergent forms of consciousness. Such forms of consciousness would not be based on any biological form of evolution. Their desires and wishes might seem entirely foreign and indecipherable to humans, for we are incapable of escaping beyond the bubble which is our own perception. The potential relationship between mankind and machine intelligence has been explored in countless science fiction books, Isaac Asimov, Frank Hebert, Ian M. Banks, have all written about this idea in various different way. But in this video will will discuss one of the most interesting examples, in one of the most often overlooked book series. The Hyperion Cantos is a series of science fiction books written by Dan Simmons. The books begin several hundreds of years into our own future. In this time after the “Big Mistake” Which destroyed all life on the planet Earth, humankind has spread out among the galaxy and formed the Hegemony which connected hundreds of worlds by Farcaster technology, which was created by the technocore. Fatline Technology, also a gift from the Core, allowed for instantaneous communication and travel between equipped worlds. Farcaster technology, like many others, had been a gift from the Technocore. The Technocore was a combination of Artificial intelligences that had originated on earth but eventually evolved self awareness and sentences. The Technocore evolved to become distinct from humanity itself as it was a major player on the galactic stage, acting as its own independent society. The relationship between the technocore and the human race was seemingly a cooperative one, the Technore even advised the hegemony, through avatars of their own creation.
